Coach Profile: Robert Taylor

I have been involved in the sport of triathlon as an athlete and coach for over 32 years. I have competed in more than 30 Ironman distances races, while qualifying for, and participating in multiple Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Over the past ten years I have coached numerous athletes who have also qualified for the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championships.

Description of Robert Taylor

I grew up playing a variety of youth sports and eventually gravitated to basketball. While serving in the United States Marine Corps in San Diego, CA I participated as a member of the First Marine Division basketball team as a player and assistant coach, and was also introduced to the sport of triathlon. After completing my obligation with the Marines, I remained in San Diego to pursue triathlon full time while also earning an undergraduate degree in physical education at San Diego State University. I was fortunate enough to train and race in San Diego in the 1980’s and early 1990’s when triathlon was still in its infancy, and most of the learning was done by trial and error. When it became apparent that I didn’t possess the swim skills to be competitive as a full - time triathlete, I focused my efforts on becoming a collegiate basketball coach.

I served as an assistant high school basketball coach in San Diego, a men’s basketball graduate assistant coach at Frostburg State University, a graduate assistant at The University of Southern Mississippi, and the women’s basketball head coach and associate professor of kinesiology at California Baptist University. Along the way, I earned a master’s degree in health and physical education, and a doctorate in human performance.

Since 2001 I have been an associate professor of sport management at California University of Pennsylvania, where I developed an online graduate degree program and have served as program director for the past eleven years. In 2004 I began competing in Ironman events again after a thirteen-year absence from competition. In 2006 I began coaching triathletes on a part-time basis, and decided to pursue the Trisutto Coaching Certification in 2016 so that I might be qualified to teach what I believe to be the most successful training method in the sport of triathlon. I completed the on-deck supervised coaching experience with Coach Brett Sutton and the Trisutto coaching staff during camps at St. Moritz during the Summer of 2017. For 7 years I also served as a volunteer assistant with my two sons’ high school track and cross-country teams, assisting with middle distance, 400m hurdles, and pole vault.

I currently host a week-long annual Trisutto camp in Cozumel, Mexico in January, as well as mini camps in Hilton Head, SC, Lexington, SC, and Jacksonville, FL. The goal is to establish a series of mini camps throughout the Southeastern US.

Why do you work with Trisutto?

For years I was competitive in my age group, but never quite able to t challenge the top athletes. I began training with the Trisutto method and saw immediate results. In my first season training with the Trisutto method I raced two full Ironman events and four Ironman 70.3 events. I won my age group at Ironman Louisville, Ironman 70.3 Augusta, and Ironman 70.3 North Carolina all in a span of four weeks, while placing no less than third place in the other events. After struggling for years with various training plans, I was finally able to get over the hump using the Trisutto method. Now, I am dedicated to assisting others in reaching their own goals using the same method.
