Why Hainan Island?

What do these places all have in common?
Jindabyne, Leysin, Subic Bay, Jeju, Maspalomas, Krabi, the Sunshine Coast, St Moritz… and now Hainan Island.
They are all locations where Brett Sutton has taken his squads for training camps—always in search of the ideal environment to train, adapt, and improve.
So what was it like spending two weeks with Brett at the Chinese National Team camp on Hainan Island—often described as China’s Hawaii?
The team was in full preparation for the World Triathlon Cup Haikou, held just an hour from camp. Sitting on the same latitude as Kona, Hainan offers a similar climate—consistent warmth, humidity, and the kind of conditions that shape race-ready athletes.
The setup was simple, but perfect: a camp hotel with its own 50m pool, just 200m from the beach. Quiet safe roads for riding, an athletics track 15 minutes away, and a perfect run loop right outside the hotel door.
It’s exactly what Brett looks for—an environment that allows athletes to focus, train hard, and keep improving every day.
It also makes an ideal location for age group camps: just one hour from an international airport, with cultural experiences, a beach setting, and western food options readily available.
